SAP HANA is an in-memory database. This means all the data is in RAM. As we all know that RAM is a volatile memory and all the data get lost when power goes down.

This leads to a very obvious question:

FAQ : What happens when power goes down in SAP HANA? Do we loose all the valuable data?
The answer is NO.

SAP HANA is an in-memory database which means all the data resides in RAM. But there is also a disc memory just for backup purpose.

In-memory computing is safe: The SAP HANA database holds the bulk of its data in memory for maximum performance, but still uses persistent storage (disk memory) to provide a fallback in case of failure.

FAQ : Can we just increase the memory of the traditional database (like Oracle) to 1 TB and get similar performance?

NO. You might have performance gains due to more memory available for your current Oracle/Microsoft/Teradata database, but HANA is not just a database with bigger RAM. It is combination of a lot of hardware and software technologies. The way data is stored and processed by the In-Memory data base is the true differentiator. Having that data available in RAM is just the icing on the cake.

FAQ : Operating System Supported By SAP HANA ?:

Earlier SUSE Linux Enterprise Server x86-64 (SLES) 11 SP1 was the only Operating System supported by SAP HANA.From SPS08, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is also supported.
SAP HANA is developed in C++ language.

FAQ : Why SAP HANA is fast?

FAQ : How big can a SAP HANA Database grow? Does it scale?

with current hardware ,SAP HANA can scale up to 6TB for a single system, and can scale out of 112TB in a cluster ,or more . There is no hard technical limit to the size of a HANA cluster .Higher configuration are tested and certified at customer sites.

we are currently working with 24TB single systems with SAP that we expect to see this year.

Remember that a 10TB HANA appliance can store a vast amount of data ( as much as 50-100TB from a traditional RDBMS due to HANA data Compression capabilities) .this could represent all the credit card transaction for a top 10 bank for 10 years or more .

FAQ : What is SAP HANA stands for?

HANA stands for High Performance Analytical Appliance and is an SAP in-memory, column-based appliance to optimize performance for Business Intelligence & data warehousing related applications.

FAQ : What is the meaning of the name Hana?

Hana as a given name may have any of several origins. It is a variant transliteration of Hannah, which is the Jewish and Christian form, meaning Grace in Hebrew associated with God, as well as an Arabic name meaning happiness (هَنا), a Persian name meaning flower (حَنا), and a Kurdish name.
